Description
Lakshmi Puja is a sacred Hindu ritual dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, prosperity, wisdom, and good fortune. Celebrated in special during Deepavali, the festival of lights, Lakshmi Puja is considered an auspicious occasion to invite the goddess’s blessings into one’s home and life. The puja symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good fortune over adversity.
The preparation for Lakshmi Puja begins with cleaning and decorating the house. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi only visits clean and well-lit homes, so people ensure that every corner of the house is spotless and beautifully adorned with flowers, rangoli (colored patterns on the floor), and diyas to create a welcoming atmosphere.
On the day of the puja, a clean space is set up for the idol or image of Goddess Lakshmi, often accompanied by Lord Ganesha, her consort. The puja area is decorated with flowers, kumkum (red powder), and incense. An altar is created where the goddess is invoked, and offerings are prepared.
The puja begins with the lighting of lamps and incense to purify the space. The priest recites mantras, particularly the Ganapathi & Lakshmi Stotras, Ganapathi Mantra & Sri Suktam, a powerful hymn in praise of the goddess, invoking her to bestow blessings of wealth, health, and prosperity. Devotees also chant the Ganapati & Lakshmi Stotra to remove any obstacles and ensure the puja is successful.
Offerings of fruits, sweets, coins, and new business or household items are placed before the goddess. A traditional sweet, prasadam, is prepared and offered as a token of devotion. In addition to these material offerings, prayers for spiritual wealth, peace, and happiness are also made.
The highlight of Lakshmi Puja is the aarti, a ritual in which devotees wave lighted lamps in a circular motion in front of the goddess’s idol while singing hymns. The puja concludes with the distribution of prasad (blessed food), and the lighting of more diyas around the home, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness and the welcoming of prosperity.
Lakshmi Puja is not just a celebration of material wealth, but also an opportunity to seek divine blessings for spiritual well-being, harmony, and abundance in every aspect of life.
