Description
Pitru Dosha Puja is a significant Vedic ritual performed to mitigate the adverse effects caused by Pitru Dosha, which occurs when ancestral souls are dissatisfied or have not attained peace due to improper or neglected rituals during their lifetime or after death. This dosha can manifest as obstacles in family life, financial difficulties, delayed marriages, health issues, or a lack of peace and prosperity in the household.
Purpose of Pitru Dosha Puja
The ritual aims to:
- Appease the ancestral spirits (Pitru).
- Seek forgiveness for any mistakes or omissions in performing ancestral rites.
- Alleviate the karmic burden of unfulfilled duties toward one’s ancestors.
- Bring blessings for overall prosperity, health, and family harmony.
When and Where to Perform
- Best Days: This puja can be performed on any day in accordance with advise and guidance of the qualified astrologer or priest.
- Location: Gokarna, one of its spiritual significance, is a preferred destination for this puja which is known as Muktikshetra.
As per our belief who can perform this Puja?
- It is a belief that the eldest son of the family member descendant is traditionally considered the primary person to perform Pitru Puja.
- In the absence of the eldest son, other male family members, such as younger sons, grandsons, or close male relatives whose father isn’t alive, can perform the rituals.
Spiritual and Ritual Purity:
- The individual must observe ritual purity, including abstaining from certain foods and activities for a specified period (get advice from the qualified priest)
- Faith and devotion are essential components of the ritual.
- A clean and disciplined lifestyle, including physical cleanliness and a focused mind (devotion), Shraddha and Bhakti is recommended.
Temple Darshanam:
- It is preferable as per our belief that to have temple darshana before the pitru puja or day after the pitru puja.
What things to be brought:
- The Kartru who is (are) performing the puja, should bring their puja cloth (preferable to wear white dhoti and anga vastra)

Procedure
- Sankalpa (Vow): The priest guides the devotee in taking a vow to perform the puja for the specified purpose.
- Tarpana (Offering): Water mixed with black sesame seeds (thil) and other offerings is made to invoke and appease the ancestors.
- Shraddha Ceremony: Rituals are performed to honor the ancestors, including offering pindas (rice balls) and chanting mantras.
- Homam (Havana): A fire ceremony is conducted to purify and elevate the souls of ancestors.
