Description
Varamahalakshmi Vrata Puja is a significant Hindu ritual performed by married women to invoke the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, prosperity, and well-being. Observed on the second Friday of the Shravana month (July-August), this puja is particularly popular in South India and is believed to bring prosperity, health, and happiness to the family.
The ritual is dedicated to Varamahalakshmi, a form of Lakshmi who fulfills the desires of her devotees. The word “Varamahalakshmi” signifies the “giver of boons and prosperity.” Women perform this vrat (vow) to ensure the welfare and longevity of their family members, particularly their husbands.
The puja begins with cleaning and decorating the house, followed by preparing the sacred space for the ritual. An idol or kalasha (pot) representing Goddess Lakshmi is adorned with turmeric, kumkum, flowers, and jewelry. The kalasha is placed on a decorated altar, and devotees offer traditional items such as fruits, sweets, betel leaves, rice, and coconut.
Special prayers and Lakshmi Sahasranama Stotram (a hymn of 1,000 names of Lakshmi) are recited to invoke the Goddess. Devotees also tie a sacred thread, known as Vrata Raksha, on their wrists as a symbol of protection and fulfillment of vows.
Fasting is commonly observed, and women pray for the well-being and prosperity of their families. At the end of the puja, prasad (blessed offerings) is distributed among family and friends.
The Varamahalakshmi Vrata Puja is a celebration of devotion, gratitude, and the divine feminine power. It reinforces the importance of family, tradition, and faith while fostering spiritual growth and unity within the household.
